This package of resources and articles was designed to introduce students to the major legal questions which must be considered when starting a small business.
The information was designed to complement Legal Studies module 3050: Law and Small Business, however it could be used in other subjects such as CALM or Social Studies. Topics covered in this package of information include:

the various ways in which a small business can be organized (propietorship, partnership, corporation);

the advantages and disadvantages of establishing a business in a leased property;
-
financing options and considerations;
-
contracts - what needs to be put in writing; and
-
the rights and responsibilities of both employers and employees.
Note: the articles and activity contained within this package were originally published in a July 2009 issue of LawNow magazine. They have since been reviewed and updated for 2010.
